Join us in the Sebastian Cox workshop in Margate this autumn and learn how to make your own wooden keep-sake box to take home, using British wood and traditional hand tools.

Led by Sebastian, an award-winning furniture designer, maker and environmentalist known for his sustainable, zero-waste approach to craftsmanship, this day class is perfect for anyone interested in making something beautiful, simple and functional, with no previous woodworking experience necessary.

As well as sharing an introduction to timber technology, Seb will invite you to choose from a selection of British-grown wood and teach you how to:

Lay out dovetails using a marking knife and square
Cut to a line with a dovetail saw
Pare with a chisel
Use a block plane
Cut rebates with a router
Sand and finish your box before taking it home

You will need: 
Comfortable clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting a bit dusty
It’s sensible to tie hair back and avoid dangly jewellery or accessories
Patience and enthusiasm
Sweeping and tea making skills are desirable but not essential

Following a series of workshops hosted in our former London workshop, this experience returns for a limited number of dates in our new Margate workshop this year. All tools will be provided and a delicious lunch served around the table in our welcoming studio space.

Our new Woodwose coffee table is the perfect companion to their lounge-style benches. Woodwose, is an old English word meaning wild wo/man or wo/man of the woods. This is apt considering the wood is sourced from sustainably and thoughtfully managed native woodland where biodiversity is nurtured for generations to come.

The Leasowe bench is the latest addition to our lounge-style outdoor collection. Made from English-grown oak and sweet chestnut, it’s naturally durable and ideal for a life outside. Inspired by the Old English name, Leasowe, meaning ‘meadow pasture’, this versatile bench feels equally at home nestled among wild grasses and open landscapes as it does in a courtyard or on a terrace.

The Sweven bedside table is made from solid, English-grown oak and finished using our in-house liming technique, it’s rich, tactile and quietly beautiful. A single door opens away from the bed, revealing an adjustable shelf inside. The legs have gently rounded corners and its neat footprint makes it equally as comfortable in modest spaces as it is in generous rooms.

The Cleft chest of drawers is rich in texture, given from the hand of the maker, framed within a handsomely dovetailed solid oak carcass. A tableau of chestnut shakes, harvested from our own woodland, cleft and individually coloured by hand, cover three drawer fronts. We use colour derived from linseed oils to create a sensitive composition unique to each sideboard.

The Estovers side table is clean and simple in form and cleverly constructed to give table top and nook storage. It has a neat footprint, making it suitable for most trees that come into our wood yard, big or small but always harvested for the benefit of the woodland. Each side table is expertly made by our highly skilled makers, in our workshop, using solid English-grown wood that’s rich in character.

The Bayleaf settle provides a cocooning place to sit; visually, acoustically and comfortably soft. The frame is made from solid English ash, woven with flexible strips of English ash, in our workshop. The Bayleaf settle can be upholstered in your own fabric (customer’s own material, COM) or fabric supplied by us. Listed price includes the upholstery cost, but excludes fabric.

The Hedge bench offers a relaxed seat with a subtle recline. Made in Sebastian's own workshop using English-grown oak and sweet chestnut that's naturally durable and ideal for a life outside. 

While the name is derived from it's imagined leafy setting, this piece is ideally suited to urban environments complimenting fire pits and terraces. Use this piece to either immerse yourself in nature or relax into elegant conviviality.

The Hewn Underwood chair joints four legs of hazel coppiced from our woodland into a square English ash seat with neatly wedged tenons. The legs are cut from hazel coppiced in our woodland with an elegantly tapered foot and gently splayed to give a strong footprint, simple silhouette and characterful materiality. The Hewn Underwood chair offers extra comfort in the backrest with a clean and simple silhouette.

The Wild leather lounge chair is an assured piece. The curve of the arms is confident and comfortable. This piece is made in our workshop, where hides of wild leather from the Lake District are stretched over curved ribs of solid yet flexible English elm.
