Winter

We manage our own plot of ancient woodland, Broome Wood, for materials and biodiversity. It is a living, breathing and thriving example of how we believe wooded land should be used.

The woodland in winter is in hibernation. The maiden treetops are skeletal and statuesque. The understory is still dense but is not thrusting towards the light. There is a peacefulness.

It is however not still, nor is it quiet. As we take our axes, billhook and chainsaw and carefully coppice the next coup of hazel. We harvest hazel rods that have been growing for 8-12 years. They are straight, strong and ready to be used in our furniture collections.
