The restorative power of nature-inspired design
Sebastian Cox present hotel furniture made from the land
Crafted at Powdermills is a newly-opened retreat tucked away in the meandering hills and ancient woodland of the High Weald National Landscape in East Sussex - an area of quiet beauty and deep rural heritage. Sebastian Cox have just delivered the final pieces of furniture for the 55 guest suites which echo the soft lines and gentle curves of the surrounding landscape. Made from wood milled nearby, the collection celebrates the beauty of the materials that can be found right on our doorstep.
“Guests will wake up in a bed made from nearby woodlands.”
Over a year and a half period, we concurrently developed a plan to return nature to the 75 acre estate which will unfold over years. This includes meadow and woodland management, beaver mimicry, tree veteranisation and conservation grazing. We hope to attract red-listed species like nightingales and dormice back to the land over the coming years. Sebastian also leads monthly walking tours and trail runs to help communicate this regenerative work to guests and members.
This month, Crafted was awarded South East England hotel of the year by The Sunday Times. What founder Chris King and architects House of Dre have achieved is far more than simply a place to stay; it is a place designed for complete reset. The hotel’s sauna, wild swimming, workshops and nature-inspired design all combine to create a deeply restorative environment.
There is something especially meaningful about creating pieces that belong to a place. We’re so pleased to share these pieces and the place with you.
