Tides: a new collaboration between Brogan Cox and NAT MAKS
TIDES, a striking new collection of marbled sycamore tables, marks the debut collaboration between multidisciplinary artist NAT MAKS and furniture designer Brogan Cox, partner of Sebastian Cox and co‑founder of the Sebastian Cox studio.
Premiering at London Craft Week 2025, at No.9 Cork Street gallery in Mayfair, TIDES unites NAT MAKS’ fluid ink marbling with Brogan Cox’s contemporary woodwork, creating functional, sculptural tables inspired by nature’s rhythm and the raw beauty of their coastal home in Margate.
The limited‑edition collection features two table designs:
● High Tide – an occasional side table (400mm diameter, 500mm tall)
● Low Tide – a coffee table (800mm diameter, 400mm tall)
Both are crafted from solid, English‑grown sycamore, a fast‑growing hardwood often overlooked and underappreciated.
Sycamore is considered a weed in some forestry circles but it’s wonderfully tactile, pale and accepting of colour ‑ perfect for this marbling process. It’s like giving a forgotten material a second life.
The pieces are manufactured at the Sebastian Cox workshop, using a hybrid approach: CNC machining for precision, and extensive hand‑finishing to retain the warmth and nuance of craft. Each table is then hand‑dipped in marbled ink ‑ the fluid markings wrapping the wood in a gesture reminiscent of waves washing ashore.
Stone is one of those beautiful materials we love but rarely get to work with, because it's often unsustainable. This collaboration with NAT MAKS has allowed us to achieve the aesthetic of stone, but with the tactility and sustainability of wood. It’switty, playful and poetic.
For NAT MAKS (Natascha Maksimovic), best known for her expressive, hand‑marbled wallpapers and artworks, this collaboration marks an exciting leap into three‑dimensional design.
“Moving from 2D to 3D has opened up a whole new level of interaction,” Maksimovic says. “It’s not just a surface anymore ‑ it’s an object you can walk around, touch, experience. You can get lost in the marbling as it curves with the grain of the wood. It’s a celebration of fluidity.”
The colourways are inspired by elemental themes and coastal life ‑ the first being a pink and orange sunset drawn from Margate’s fiery skies. A second palette takes inspiration from tidal pools: earthy greens meeting soft oranges, like water meeting land under the open sky.
TIDES is more than a table collection ‑ it's a love letter to overlooked materials, to the sea, and to slow, intentional making. It’s also a reflection of a partnership between two female makers who are quietly reshaping the conversation around craft, collaboration and materiality.
