Scorched: New work for exhibition curated by Sarah Myerscough

The Sebastian Cox studio and workshop has produced a unique new table for London Craft Week’s debut exhibition, Scorched, guest curated by Sarah Myerscough. The dramatic and textured piece will be on display from 8 - 12 May at the Fitzrovia Chapel.

Scorched is a curated collection of wood pieces showcasing the traditional process of shou-sugi-ban, otherwise known as yakisugi; this technique originates from 18th century Japan and involves the charring of the surface of the wood. We love the way it accentuates the grain of the wood as early growth and late growth (which form the annual rings of a tree) burn at different speeds. What is more, wood is solid carbon and it’s nice to be reminded of that so keenly when it is blackened and burnt.

We’re delighted for our work to feature alongside other invited artists who have been asked to consider the process of scorching in their practice, including Alison Crowther, David Gates, Christopher Kurtz, Eleanor Lakelin, John Makepeace, Peter Marigold, Malcolm Martin & Gaynor Dowling, Gareth Neal, Jim Partridge & Liz Walmsley, Wycliffe Stutchbury and Nic Webb.
