RM Williams Jermyn Street
“As a furniture maker, I’m really interested in pushing the boundaries of what we can do with wood, one of our oldest materials, probably next to leather.”
Sebastian Cox designed and made the interior display cabinets and furniture for the RM Williams store on Jermyn Street which opened in March 2026.
From the outset, we felt a strong alignment with RM Williams’ principles: designing with intent, bespoke durable craftsmanship, and connecting to the land and community. In 1932, a young Reginald Murray ‘RM’ Williams crafted his first leather boot while camping in the Flinders Ranges, using just a single piece of leather folded around and stitched at the back to resolve the problem of the stirrups rubbing around the seams. That boot became a symbol of Australian style and its pioneering design became a key conceptual narrative that we carried throughout the store.
Using a specialised kerfing technique, we carefully bent and fitted each wooden component perfectly into place. As part of this process, the separate sections of wood were stitched together which is a detail thoughtfully highlighted throughout the store. This collaboration is a true celebration of the versatility and durability of materials which, when designed with intention, last a life-time.
