AFTER CARE

Have you ever scratched your smartphone? A phone is a functional object that needs to tolerate the knocks of everyday life yet a single scratch is often highly visible and looks dreadful. The overall look of the product falls off a cliff-edge as a result of light wear and tear; the perfect example of something 'over-finished'. We believe in the importance of a finish that has longevity and therefore never over-finish any of our pieces in the first place.

The joy of working with wood, is that it is a material that can handle wear and tear if treated correctly. A beautiful wooden surface shouldn’t look glossy or glassy. Wood is made of plant fibres and we spend a lot of time taming it, making it smooth and warm to the touch so that it feels like wood; not plastic or glass. At the same time, your wooden furniture shouldn’t pick up every grain of dirt that comes near it, and should have a decent level of protection against water or grease, it should be tolerant of daily life, without being a surface so perfect you have to worry about what you put down on it for fear of scratching it. Our furniture is intended to be used.

Because of this, we use sympathetic oils that offer heard wearing protection while keeping the wood looking like wood. We use finishes made by Osmo, derived from natural oils and waxes and are therefore kind to the wood, not coating it in a layer of plastic like some spray finishes do, but soaking into the surface and keeping out dirt, while still allowing the wood to breathe.

The Osmo finish that we apply in the workshop provides good resistance to spillages such as water, juice, tea, and even wine. To keep your furniture clean once you've got it home, please simply wipe with a damp cloth and warm soapy water, nothing more chemically harsh or abrasive. There is an Osmo product for daily cleaning but warm soapy water is fine in our opinion. It's how we clean our furniture at home.

The finish we provide should last for many years, but we understand from our clients that they like to keep their furniture well protected, so enjoy the process of annually applying reviving product. There are Osmo products which can be applied annually to keep the finish up to strength. We'd always advise trying something like this on a patch of wood on the underside of the piece to see how it looks first.

If you damage the surface of your piece of furniture beyond normal wear and tear, please get in touch with the workshop for some advice. Often the oil can simply be topped up to hide any blemishes but we can advise on what solution is best and the type of oil we originally used on your piece, as we often use different kinds of Osmo for different species of wood.

Remember, because it’s always made from solid wood, and never with veneer, it can always be re-sanded and re-finished if after 50 years you would like to give it a new lease of life before handing it down to your grandchildren.

Most importantly though, enjoy watching your Sebastian Cox piece grow old gracefully.
